The obverse of the medal takes its form from three main elements: (1) the Olympic podium, (2) Winter sport, and (3) Swiss minimalist design & clockwork.

The Olympic podium at the center, represent the peak of sporting achievement. The center design also resembles an Ice Hockey puck, used in one of the most popular winter sports in the world.

The circular line patterns that form the 20 concentric circles around the podium symbolise the year 2020 where the Youth Olympic Winter Games will be celebrated. They form the tracks that skiers follow, and appear to be one whole Curling target.

The design is also heavily inspired by Swiss minimalist design and the movement of several clockwork pieces to show passing of time.

The overall design presents a simple message that those who follow their dreams are transformed by the journey itself. Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympic Games said that "The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part." The Olympic journey is a Podium of Time where opportunities open, dreams are born, and the future begins! This medal seeks to inspire the next generation to never stop dreaming and let the pursuit of their dreams transform them to be better and greater.
