Young athletes are the future of the Olympic Games as children are the future of the World. They are the most brilliant example for the younger ones as they all, undoubtedly, lead the way by heading to the top. Trying to conceive the representation of the front side of the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 medal, I firstly wanted to depict the historic continuation of the Olympic Games, by including two plants: the one from the birthplace of the Olympic Games (olive branch = peace, Greece) and the other of the host country (hibiscus syriacus, national flower - symbol of the Republic of Korea). Having in mind the four primary elements of the Universe (harmony, symmetry, balance and roundness), I tried to incorporated them in my design. Finally, but most important, I kept in mind the vision of Gangwon 2024 (“ to let young people celebrate peaceful coexistence and unity through sport, and create a better future together). By these thoughts, I was leaded to create a five-hands united scheme, according to the five Olympic rings, in a harmonious, symmetrical, balanced and round-shaped way. Concerning the central pattern, it represents snowflakes (winter symbol) which form the uphill way that the athletes have to follow constantly in order to reach the top (the five Olympic Rings). Coming from an athletic family, my two brothers and I have been practicing sports (basketball, tennis, athletics) since I remember. My younger brother also had the opportunity to study in Busan and Seoul for a summer school in 2015, and he still remembers the great hospitality of the Korean people. It would be my honor to have my design of “Leading the way, Heading to the top” be used for the Gangwon 2024 Winter YOG medals and share this message of excellence, friendliness and harmony with the entire world. We all wish you a great success in hosting the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024! Yours sincerely, Christianna Asprouli
